Machinery Hazard and Machine Safety Training
Machinery is essential in modern workplaces, but it also presents significant hazards if not properly designed, operated, maintained, or safeguarded. Unsafe machinery can result in serious injuries such as crushing, entanglement, amputation, electric shock, burns, and even fatalities. Most machinery-related incidents are preventable through effective hazard identification, risk assessment, machine safeguarding, safe work procedures, and employee competency.
Machinery Hazard and Machine Safety Training is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify machinery hazards, understand the principles of machine safeguarding, and implement safe work practices in accordance with Malaysian occupational safety and health requirements and internationally recognized best practices. The program emphasizes hazard recognition, risk control, safe machine operation, preventive maintenance, inspection techniques, emergency response, and the importance of following Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures during servicing and maintenance activities.
Participants will learn how to identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, and ergonomic hazards associated with machinery and equipment. Through case studies, practical exercises, group discussions, and workplace examples, they will develop the ability to assess risks and recommend appropriate engineering, administrative, and personal protective measures to prevent machinery-related accidents.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be better equipped to contribute to a safer workplace by ensuring machinery is operated, inspected, maintained, and safeguarded in compliance with applicable Malaysian occupational safety and health legislation and organizational safety requirements.
Course Objectives
- Understand the principles of machinery safety and the importance of preventing machinery-related accidents and injuries.
- Identify common machinery hazards, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic,pneumatic, thermal, noise, vibration, and ergonomic hazards.
- Recognize hazardous machine motions and dangerous points such as nip points, pinch points, rotating parts, reciprocating movements, and flying objects.
- Understand the legal requirements and employer and employee responsibilities under the Malaysian Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514), as amended by the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022 (Act A1648), and other relevant machinery safety regulations.
- Conduct basic machinery hazard identification and risk assessment using HIRARC principles.
- Identify different types of machine guards and safeguarding devices and determine their appropriate applications.
- Apply safe operating procedures before, during, and after machine operation.
- Understand the principles and application of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) for machine isolation during maintenance, servicing, cleaning, and repair.
- Identify common causes of machinery incidents and recommend effective preventive and corrective measures.
- Recognize the importance of preventive maintenance, machine inspection, and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Select and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working with or around machinery.
- Respond appropriately to machinery emergencies, including emergency stop procedures, incident reporting, and first response actions.
- Promote a positive machine safety culture through effective communication, supervision, and safe work practices.
- Apply the knowledge gained to improve machinery safety performance and reduce workplace risks within their respective work areas.

Day:1 – Machinery Hazard and Machine Safety Training Outline
Module 1: Introduction to Machinery Safety
- Importance of machine safety, accident statistics, causes of machinery accidents, responsibilities
Module 2: Machinery Hazards
- Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, noise, vibration and ergonomic hazards
Module 3: Hazardous Machine Motions
- Rotating parts, nip points, pinch points, shear points, cutting, crushing, drawing-in and entanglement hazards
Module 4: Malaysian Legal Requirements
- OSHA 1994 (Act 514), OSHA (Amendment) Act 2022 (Act A1648), employer and employee duties, machine safety requirements
Module 5: Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRARC)
- Machinery risk assessment process, practical HIRARC exercise Case study.
