INTRODUCTION FOR PRODUCT DESIGN & MATERIAL SELECTION

This course is created for designer to gain a strong fundamental knowledge of product design and how product design will influence part performance & mouldability. Participant will also learn various methods that can be used for plastic parts assembly design.

Moreover, the course also emphasize how plastic material properties will influence on materials selection. It also cover the properties of plastic materials & their testing methods to meet the design specifications.

The course instructor will draw on his extensive experience to illustrate the subject matter with practical examples.

Day 1

  • Plastic materials overview
  • Molecular structure, Group of plastics, Volume vs. temperature behavior, Semi-crystalline materials, Amorphous materials, Viscosity, PVT diagram, Fountain & skin effect, Molecular orientation & relaxation, Additives, Shrinkage.
  • Materials properties
  • Physical properties, Mechanical properties, Thermal properties, Electrical properties, Environmental resistance, Moulding properties.

Lunch break

  • Product design considerations
  • Wall thickness, Radii & fillet, Corner design, Rib design, Boss design, Locator design, Flow restrictor, Flow leader, Gusset, Lettering, Holes & depression, Draft angle, Undercut, Living hinge, Material selection, Cheaper tooling.

Day 2

  • Continue Product design considerations
  • Wall thickness, Radii & fillet, Corner design, Rib design, Boss design, Locator design, Flow restrictor, Flow leader, Gusset, Lettering, Holes & depression, Draft angle, Undercut, Living hinge, Material selection, Cheaper tooling.
  • Structural analysis
  • Beam maximum stress and deflection, Torsion & shear stress, Thermal stress, Design for stiffness.

Lunch break

  • Design for assembly
  • Molded-in assembly (Snap fit, Press-fit, Molded-in threads), Assembly with fasteners, Welding methods, Chemical bonding
  • Case studies and group discussion
