Course Overview for Plant & Machinery Inspection Training
Plant and Machinery Inspection is an essential component of workplace safety and health management. Proper inspection helps organisations identify mechanical defects, equipment deterioration, unsafe operating conditions and failures of safety devices before they lead to workplace accidents, injuries, equipment damage or operational disruption. An effective inspection program combines risk assessment, systematic inspection procedures, preventive maintenance, defect reporting and corrective actions to ensure that plant and machinery remain safe throughout their operational life.
In Malaysia, plant and machinery safety is closely associated with the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (OSHA 1994), including the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022, and applicable regulations governing specific categories of plant. This training program provides participants with practical knowledge of legal responsibilities, inspection planning, machinery hazards, inspection techniques, defect classification, statutory inspection requirements and inspection documentation. Participants will develop a structured approach to identifying unsafe conditions, evaluating inspection findings and recommending appropriate corrective measures to support workplace safety, operational reliability and legal compliance.
Course Objectives
By the end of this training program, participants will be able to:
- Explain the relevant provisions of OSHA 1994 and applicable regulations relating to plant and machinery safety and inspection.
- Identify common mechanical hazards, equipment defects and unsafe conditions associated with plant and machinery.
- Apply systematic inspection methods and risk-based approaches to assess equipment conditions and safety-critical components.
- Differentiate routine inspections, detailed technical inspections, preventive maintenance and statutory inspections, including applicable Certificate of Fitness requirements.
- Prepare inspection records, classify defects, recommend corrective actions and establish effective follow-up procedures.
Methodology
- Interactive Lectures: Structured presentations covering legal requirements, inspection principles, machinery hazards and safe working practices.
- Case Studies and Visual Learning: Review of machinery defects, inspection findings, unsafe conditions and workplace incident scenarios.
- Practical Inspection Exercises: Guided inspection checklist development, defect identification and risk-based evaluation using suitable equipment, photographs or workplace scenarios.
- Group Discussion and Knowledge Assessment: Discussion of corrective actions, inspection reporting, statutory compliance and implementation challenges, supported by pre- and post-training assessments where appropriate.
