INTRODUCTION FOR INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

Wastewater is any water that has been adversely affected in quality by anthropogenic influence. Municipal wastewater is usually conveyed in a combined sewer or sanitary sewer, and treated at a wastewater treatment plant. Treated wastewater is discharged into receiving water via an effluent sewer. Wastewaters generated in areas without access to centralized sewer systems rely on on-site wastewater systems. These typically comprise a septic tank, drain field, and optionally an on-site treatment unit. The management of wastewater belongs to the overarching term sanitation, just like the management of human excreta, solid waste and storm water (drainage).

Sewage is the subset of wastewater that is contaminated with faeces or urine, but is often used to mean any wastewater. Sewage includes domestic, municipal, or industrial liquid waste products disposed of, usually via a pipe or sewer (sanitary or combined).

Sewerage is the physical infrastructure, including pipes, pumps, screens, channels etc. used to convey sewage from its origin to the point of eventual treatment or disposal. It is found in all types of sewage treatment, with the exception of septic systems, which treat sewage on site.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is industry designed, to provide a broad understanding of the improvement methodology, concepts, and process. The methodology is presented with case studies and examples drawn from service, business process and engineering applications. With a heavy practice orientation, as much as a third of your time will be spent working through interactive practical exercises and assessments.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This training program is designed to provide an understanding of engineering related problems related to industry globally and a clear sense of what is required to effectively structure, establish measurements and solve problems. Participants will learn the goals and deliverables behind the solutions. Methodology as well as the most commonly used tools within each phase will be discussed. Participants will also learn how to support a problem solving initiative within their organization.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:-

  • Relate the concept of industrial wastewater treatment to actual industrial applications.
  • Recognize the model used to improve the performance of industrial wastewater treatment.
  • Recognize the factors that are necessary for proper industrial wastewater treatment.
  • Improve industrial wastewater treatment with other process improvement initiatives.

METHODOLOGY

  • The latest educational methods and strategies will be utilized.
  • The course is designed to maximize delegate participation.
  • Questions and answers are encouraged throughout and at the wrap-up session. This gives participants the opportunity to discuss with others and the presenter their specific problems and appropriate solutions.
  • The course shall be conducted through lectures, case studies, group discussions and exercises to reinforce participant’s learning.

COURSE FORMAT

The course consists of formal content presentation interspersed with content quiz sessions. The presenter’s style involves intensive participant participation.
