INTRODUCTION MACHINE AND ELECTRICAL SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAM

A Machine and Electrical Safety course in Malaysia aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and mitigate electrical hazards in the workplace. These courses cover topics like understanding electrical principles, recognizing hazards, implementing safety procedures (including Lockout/Tagout), and complying with relevant legislation. The goal is to create a safer working environment by preventing electrical accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Participants will be able to;

  • Identify common hazards associated with machinery and electrical systems.
  • Understand safety standards and legal requirements (e.g., OSHA, ST, IEC, MS & ISO).
  • Apply safe work practices when operating or servicing machines and electrical equipment.
  • Implement proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Recognize the importance of maintenance, guarding, and PPE.

 

METHODOLOGY

Discussion, Explanation, Demonstration, and Practical Exercise.

 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Production / Maintenance Supervisor, Machine operator, Employees involved in electrical work and any personnel having interest in Machinery and electrical safety

COURSE OUTLINE

MODULE 1. Introduction to Machine and Electrical Safety

  • Importance of safety
  • Key statistics on workplace injuries
  • Overview of regulations (OSHA 1910, ISO 12100, MS IEC 60204)

MODULE 2. Machine Safety

  • Types of mechanical hazards:
    • Pinch points, rotating parts, shear points
  • Machine safeguarding methods:
    • Fixed guards, interlocked guards, presence-sensing devices
  • Emergency stop and fail-safe devices
  • Case studies of machine accidents

MODULE 3. Electrical Safety

  • Electrical hazard types: shock, arc flash, arc blast, fire
  • Safe voltage levels and electrical boundaries
  • PPE for electrical work (e.g., gloves, arc-rated suits)
  • Importance of grounding and circuit protection
  • Introduction to lockable isolators and MCC panels

MODULE 4. Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

  • Purpose and legal requirements
  • Steps in a LOTO procedure
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • LOTO devices and tags
  • Hands-on simulation / demonstration

MODULE 5. Risk Assessment and Controls

  • Performing Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or HIRARC
  • Hierarchy of controls: Elimination to PPE
  • Preventive maintenance and inspection practices

MODULE 6. Human Factors and Safety Culture

  • Human error and complacency
  • Safety communication and teamwork
  • Reporting unsafe conditions

MODULE 7. Incident Response

  • What to do in case of a machine/electrical incident
  • First aid considerations for electrical shock
  • Emergency evacuation procedures
