Course Overview

The 2-Day Hoist In-House Train-the-Trainer Training is designed to develop competent internal trainers who can effectively deliver hoist safety, operation, inspection, lifting practices, and hazard awareness training to employees within the organization. The program combines technical knowledge, safe operating practices, hazard identification, risk control, practical demonstrations, and trainer-development skills.

The training provides participants with a structured understanding of hoist types and components, safe lifting principles, rated capacity/SWL, pre-use inspection, lifting accessories, load handling, signaling and communication, common hazards, emergency procedures, and safe work practices. Participants will also learn how to identify unsafe practices and demonstrate the correct operating procedures to trainees.

A key focus of the program is the Train-the-Trainer component, enabling selected competent employees or supervisors to conduct effective in-house training through lesson planning, practical demonstrations, coaching, questioning techniques, trainee assessment, and competency evaluation.

Upon completion, participants should be better prepared to conduct consistent and effective in-house hoist safety training, reinforce safe lifting practices, identify unsafe conditions, and contribute to reducing hoist-related incidents and property damage in the workplace.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the principles of hoist operation and the different types of hoists commonly used in the workplace.
  • Identify the main components and safety devices of hoisting equipment and explain their functions.
  • Understand rated capacity, SWL/WLL and load limitations to ensure loads are lifted within safe operating limits.
  • Conduct proper pre-use inspections of hoists, hooks, chains, wire ropes, brakes, controls, limit switches and lifting accessories.
  • Identify hoist-related hazards including overloading, suspended loads, improper rigging, poor communication, equipment defects and unsafe positioning.
  • Apply safe hoisting and load-handling practices, including correct positioning, lifting, travelling, lowering and parking procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe use of lifting accessories, including inspection and correct selection based on the load and lifting application.
  • Apply effective signaling and communication procedures between the hoist operator, rigger, signalman and other workers.
  • Understand emergency and abnormal operating procedures, including equipment malfunction, dropped-load risks and power failure.
  • Identify unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop an effective in-house hoist training program, including lesson planning, training materials and practical exercises.
  • Demonstrate effective training and coaching techniques, including explanation, demonstration, questioning, observation and feedback.
  • Conduct practical demonstrations of safe hoist operation according to established workplace procedures.
  • Assess trainee knowledge and practical competency using appropriate written, verbal and practical assessment methods.
  • Provide constructive feedback and corrective coaching to trainees who demonstrate unsafe practices.
  • Develop and maintain consistent in-house training standards to support continuous improvement in hoist safety and workplace risk control.

Who Should Attend

  • Hoist operators, supervisors, competent persons, safety personnel, maintenance personnel and employees selected to conduct in-house hoist training.

Training Methodology

  • Interactive presentation, group discussion, case studies, hazard identification, equipment/component demonstration, practical exercises, coaching practice, trainee assessment and Train-the-Trainer presentation.
