INTRODUCTION FOR JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY (BASIC)

Designed specifically for beginners, this 20-hour Basic Japanese Language Proficiency course focuses on oral communication skills. Ideal for individuals with no prior background in Japanese, the course emphasizes speaking and listening—without reading or writing Japanese characters. Whether you’re planning to travel, work with Japanese clients, or simply explore a new culture, this course lays the foundation of conversational Japanese.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic competency and understanding of Japanese for daily spoken communication.

  • Apply basic Japanese greetings and express requests or information in simple oral exchanges.

 

LEARINING METHODOLOGY

This program is delivered through a blended approach of interactive lectures and practice-based learning.

Participants will:

  • The programme focuses on building confidence from understanding the fundamentals of Japanese pronunciation which sets the foundation of proper pronunciation and enunciation to blend in more naturally in basic Japanese conversation.
  • With a mixture of lectures and active engagement, the lessons are built on learning basic grammar and vocabulary to enable participants to be able to construct own sentences, followed by reading aloud, and conversational role play.

  • Master basic sounds using the Hiragana chart

  • Understand numbers, counters, calendar terms, and time expressions

  • Learn basic parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs

  • Construct basic sentence structures and tenses (present & past)

  • Form and use direct questions and question words

Module 2: Pronunciation & Enunciation Skills

  • Practice pronunciation: cyou-on, hatsu-on, soku-on, you-on, accent patterns

  • Develop fluency through dialogue practice and short speech drills

Module 3: Vocabulary & Situational Dialogue

  • Expand vocabulary through visual and contextual learning

  • Practice with real-life situations, including:

    • Self-introduction

    • Asking and providing information

    • Making offers and asking for help

    • Telephone conversations

    • Work-related terminology

    • Basic Japanese cultural expressions

Module 4: Confidence in Speaking

  • Improve fluency through listening and mimicking audio drills

  • Strengthen pronunciation and natural intonation patterns
